Lauriston Girls’ School’s
Science and Resource Centre
is a freestanding building
accommodating information
technology and resources on
the ground floor and
laboratories for a range of
science disciplines on the first

floor. The architectural
expression has been
developed to reflect a new
vision for science and
technology within the school.

The east and west elevations
are simple planes of stabilised
rammed earth composed of
crushed recycled demolition
material, predominantly brick
and concrete.

This material reinterprets the
existing masonry of the school
and provides a visible
statement of the school’s
position on environmental
responsibility.

The ground floor resource
centre is symbolically and
functionally the centre for
sourcing and exchange of
information.

It is visible and transparent to
the rest of the school
expressing ideas of
accessibility and integration.
